Since the days of the first AFI Seminar, USUA has been committed to the concept of sharing knowledge via the seminar/clinic setting. Having a room full of Advanced Flight Instructors interacting and discussing issues such as training techniques, registration program implementation and changes in the sport aviation environment, has proved to be beneficial and significant. From the original AFI Seminar grew the BFI Clinic. This provided a vehicle for all ultralight instructors to share in this experience. Other programs have noted the success of these clinics, and have recognized the successful completion of a USUA BFI Clinic as satisfying the requirements for their mandated refresher courses.
USUA has taken this one step further. By adding topics to the agenda of clinic such as: Airspace from the ultralight perspective, The sectional Chart Is Your Best Friend, Weather, Ultralight Operation/Inspection and Radio Communications, these sessions have proved helpful to not only the established instructor, but also the pilot in training. For USUA members wishing to participate in the upcoming Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft program, the topical information presented will aid in transitioning, For those continuing to operate under Part 103, USUA Ground Instructor Program and safe piloting issues are covered. All information is pertinent to help you pursue your chosen path.
USUA Seminar Presenter Jim Sweeney (USUA AFI A10798) has this to say about the new BFI Clinics: "These courses have grown in attendance and popularity. They provide an opportunity to review material from the practical application perspective. You will get more out of this course than you thought was in Part 103! The clinics are open to Fixed Wing, Trike, Powered Parachute and Powered Paraglider BFIs and AFIs from any FAA recognized ultralight training program. But they are not limited to instructors any more. Pilots wishing to hone or refresh his or her piloting skills are certainly welcome as well."
Clinic registration begins at 8AM, with the BFI Clinic/Refresher Course/AFI Seminar starting at 8:15AM, and concluding around 5:30PM. AFI Seminar attendees must attend the BFI Clinic, and the entire session is open to all. Only qualified AFI candidates will be registered as Advanced Flight Instructors. The Clinic fee is $100.00, payable at the door.
