Microlight pilots interested in competing on a world class level may also want to consider participating in the FAI Colibri Badge program. Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) Colibri badges are international standards of achievement and proficiency that recognize a pilot's successful completion of specific flying goals. In fact, many tasks that will be performed by the World Class Competition pilots entered in the 9th US National Microlight Championships will be eligible for these international awards.
To earn a Colibri badge, a pilot must have accumulated a certain number of solo flight hours, flown a series of predetermined precision landings and cross-country flights. At the higher badge levels, the pilot must have achieved a record or competed in an FAI sanctioned meet. The qualifications for Colibri badges are the same in every country and they do not require renewal. To acknowledge the accomplishment of a Colibri badge holder, the distinguished pilot receives a bronze, silver or gold plated lapel pin and a certificate. For more information, the FAI Colibri Badge Program Booklet (PDF) describes this award, outlines the rules and criteria, and contains the various application forms.
When holding a competition or attempting a record, it is essential that a Microlight Observer validate any of the above contest or record activity.
Microlight observers assure that officially recognized ultralight contests and records are conducted in accordance with all applicable parameters and rules. An observer must be familiar with all aspects of the U.S. Microlight Contest & Records program. The volunteers who officiate in the U.S. Microlight Contest & Records program are part of the elite group that maintains the integrity of officially recognized American competitive ultralight activity.
